Dr. Todd Winkler is a Cincinnati optometrist with over 25 years of experience who offers comprehensive eye exams and the latest in contact lenses. Our office is conveniently located inside the Kenwood Eyemart Express®, which offers discount glasses in about an hour.
In addition to affordable eye exams and contact lenses, the opticians next to our eye doctor’s office can produce many eyeglasses prescriptions in about an hour, and at a mere fraction of the cost of other 1-hour opticals in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
Our office can provide a wide variety of disposable contact lenses, whether you wear daily disposable contact lenses, 2-week lenses, monthly contact lenses, toric or astigmatism lenses, or even rigid gas permeable contact lenses.
We maintain an extensive inventory of both free trial lenses and contact lenses for purchase. Therefore, if for some reason we do not carry your prescription in stock, we can oftentimes provide you with a free trial pair to assist you until your lenses arrive. When we do have to order lenses, we receive the vast majority of them the very next day, or we can have them shipped directly to your home or office if you prefer.
Dr. Winkler is one of only the relative few eye care professionals in the Cincinnati area who treats patients with keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea becomes thin and distorted.
There are now three categories of contact lenses for keratoconus: these are rigid gas permeable, hybrid, and soft. Since we have multiple fitting sets in-office, a higher success rate is achieved, and the fitting process is expedited. There is no one single type or brand of contact lens that can be used to successfully manage all keratoconus patients. Therefore, the greater the number of options, the higher the success rate.
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses have traditionally been the most common type of contact lens prescribed to manage keratoconus because of their ability to deliver improved vision due to their rigidity. Thus, hard lenses mask the irregular shape of the cornea induced by keratoconus. As a result of the oftentimes extreme shapes that affected corneas can assume, keratoconus RGP lenses are usually either much smaller or much larger than RGP lenses prescribed for normal corneas. However, the main disadvantage of RGP lenses is the lessened degree of comfort that is experienced by some wearers of by wearers of RGP lenses.
Hybrid lenses are comprised of a rigid (RGP) center surrounded by a peripheral soft (hydrogel) skirt. Therefore, these lenses can provide the improved clarity of a rigid lens with the enhanced comfort of a soft lens. Synergeyes ® is the lone manufacturer of this unique category of lenses, and Dr. Winkler is one of only a few eye care professionals in Cincinnati who can prescribe them.
Subsequently, special soft contact lenses are the newest lenses developed to manage keratoconus. Consequently, they address the needs of patients who are unable to tolerate rigid gas permeable contact lenses. In addition, a soft contact lens might also prove to be more effective for some patients who are unable to achieve a stable fit of the contact lens on the eye due to the sometimes extreme shape that a cornea with keratoconus can assume. However, soft keratoconus lenses might be less effective for some patients with large amounts of astigmatism. Alternatively, they may be a very viable option for patients who have tried unsuccessfully to wear RGP lenses in the past. Dr. Winkler is the first eye care professional in Cincinnati certified to prescribe the KeraSoft® contact lens.
